Summary of the Sonnet "Baugmaree" by Toru Dutt.
Answers
'Baugmaree' is a poem written by Toru Dutt in which she describes the greenery that surrounds their garden 'but not a sea of unvaried dull green.' She sits in front of her garden and feels that 'the sea of foliage' constitutes different shades of green. There are light-green tamarinds and dark-green bunches of mango trees. Palms look like gray pillars between the seenuls which surprise her like when hearing trumpets sound. The bamboos which are in the east of the garden are unparalleled. When the moonlight falls between the branches of these bamboo trees the white lotus looks like a silver cup. One who will see this beauty is amazed at the intoxicating beauty and remembers the beautiful garden of Adan and Eve.
The main subject of the poem is the poet’s baugmaree or garden. She cannot but help admiring the greenery in her garden.
While the foliage is pictured to be in different shades of green, the tamarind trees appear light green in color while the mangoes bearing trees have leaves that are a darker green. The palm trees that resemble gray pillars appear dull green.
In contrast to the greenery, there are various seemul trees with bright red flowers and bending over the pool. The moonlight makes the bamboo trees look a lovely sight and the white lotuses look like silver cups.
