Johanna is the story of a young girl – Johanna Chevrill, who lives with her aged mother by the edge of the Hartwood forest. It is a beautiful forest during day time, but supposedly evil at night. Few of her relatives, including her father, were known to have disappeared in the forest, when they ventured out at night.
When Johanna’s aged mother falls seriously ill, one severe wintry night, she must cross the forest to fetch the doctor who lives on the other side. She knew that, if she did not get the doctor before dawn, her mother will not survive. She runs through the forest, scared, but with a purpose, and reaches the other side and soon sees the doctor and his family in the dark. But to her horror she realises that she has been transformed into a deer and the doctor is getting ready to shoot it down for meat, to see his family through the harsh winter!
