The story Moonlight takes place in a garden near a monastery towards midnight. The priest of the monastery, Abbe Marignan, is well-known for his hatred towards women. He is determined to make his niece who stays nearby with her mother one of the nuns of the monastery. The only women he loves are nuns.
One night the priest’s wife Melanie tells him that his niece has a lover whom she meets late night in the garden after everyone is asleep. Upset at what he has heard, he decides to catch his niece red-handed. He stays awake at night and opens the door at 10 pm to go to the garden. The moonlight at this time is a beautiful scene. As he moves forward, he suddenly sees the shadow of two people under a few trees. He recognizes the shorter shadow as that of his niece. As he continues to look on, he sees the longer shadow lean forward and kiss his niece. This gives him the answer to the question that had been troubling him for long as to why the night is more enchanting than the day.
He realizes that God has made the night more beautiful than the day because it is only at this time that love can be nurtured and intimacy can be portrayed at its best.
