The novel centers on the mystery on who could have fired Mr.Hicks cottage. Five children Larry and Daisy Daikins, Pip and bets Hilton and Fatty or Fredrick Algernon trotteville with his pet dog Buster try to find out the culprit. Their suspects were, An old tramp, Mrs. Minns, Mr.Smellie and Horace peeks. But when Mr.Hick claimed that he was in London on the day of fire, he told that he saw the tempest that flew over pesterwood on the day of fire. Fatty caught him. It turns out that Mr.Hick himself fired the cottage for insurance money. Then with the help of Inspector Jenks they arrested Mr.Hick and solved the mystery.
