Secretly, narrator of the story admires the district officer for being a learned man for his research in history and coins. Writer did not visit him because he did not want to be misunderstood. Then, an invitation to writer is sent by the district officer. Friends advise him not to visit for they considered him to be a snob but the logical analysis of the writer guides him to visit. They talk generally and meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere. The rumors about their close relationships spread all around. People try to seek favors through their relationship but narrator keeps on declining wisely. One day, his childhood friend Baldev visits him and requests to present his son’s case before district officer who is falsely implicated. Although he is left with no space to say no yet he forgets it for he never intends to contact district officer in real. On a day, Baldev visists him to inform about his sons release and expresses his gratitude by giving presents to him. The narrator feels guilt for getting the undeserved reward but never discloses his secret.
