'The Voice of the City'' tells the story of a man on a quest to find the voice of New York City. He decides that there is a ''composite vocal message of massed humanity'' and aims to find out what that is. Along his journey, he encounters a bartender and asks what song-and-dance the city says to him.

Answer:

''The Voice of the City''

At the start of ''The Voice of the City,'' the narrator is reminiscing about how schoolchildren used to use chanting to help remember their lessons: ''The shin-bone is the long-est bone in the hu-man bod-y,'' he recites.

Yet, he cannot find a chant for his current question: What is the voice of a big city? That is, what is the ''composite vocal message of massed humanity''? The narrator sets out on a mission to discover this voice. Individuals voices, the narrator says, are easy to discern, but the collective voice of the city is not as simply understood.
