Achebe describes a particular actuality a modern Africa whose rich variation of ethnic and artistic characters is compounded by the influence of European colonialism. Read by Western readers, acts like Things Fall Apart are designed to confront stereotypes of Africans as ignorant savages, and present the complexities of African communities, with their alternative sets of attitudes, goals, values, and practices. Achebe is even more agitated, however, to perceive Africans themselves incorporate these institutions and turn away from their practices to compete for apparently preferred white European cultures. So Achebe represents a dual deputation to educate both African and European scholars, to reestablish a feeling of pride in African education and "to help my community recover belief in itself and put away the associations of years of denigration and self-abasement.
