The three friends-George,William samuel harris and the narrator, Jerome - are sitting in a room. They are talking ang smoking. They think that they are seriously ill, and they are discussing that how they will come over their illness. George and Harris recount their tales of woe, of the apparent one hundred and seven fatal illness that they are afflicted with. While they praise the giant leaps in medical knowledge and the prescriptions that are offered by doctors, they come to the conclusion that they are all terribly overworked and need a holiday. They decided to take a boat trip for a holiday on the River Thames. Mountmorency, their dog, seems to be displeased at the idea, but he is outvoted.
