The novel ‘Topi Shukla’, published in 1969, is set in the pre-independence era Aligarh. It depicts Hindu – Muslim communalism, politics and above all, the hypocrisy of the people in their attempts at pulling down one another, to reach the top of the society.

The novel is written by Rahi Masoom Raza (1927 – 1992), an Urdu poet and writer. Born in Uttar Pradesh, he used to write lyrics for Hindi movie songs.
