Yes, Postlethwaite had done the right thing by helping Cross Patch. In the beginning of the poem, Cross Patch was a mean and selfish person. He refused to share the heat of his fire with anyone, though that would not have taken his share of the heat away from him. Even then, when Cross Patch was choking and asking for help, his neighbour helped him and saved his life. As a result, Cross Patch was deeply touched. Postlethwaite’s help had changed Cross Patch forever. He felt sorry for being so mean and became a pleasant person who shared his things with others.  

A person needs to do the right thing even if someone else is doing the wrong thing. In this case, helping Cross Patch made Postlethwaite’s life much nicer than it was earlier.
