Explanation:

The story of Swami’s night alone features in R.K. Narayan’s collection of short stories set in the fictional village of Malgudi.

Swami’s father read a report about a boy who fought off a tiger and commended his bravery. Swami felt it must have been a fully-grown adult who must have fought it off. His father disagreed and said courage was what mattered. He dared Swami, who used to generally sleep next to his grandmother, to sleep alone in the corner of the office, in the dark. Swami agreed but out of fear slept under the bench at night, thinking about devils and demons coming to lift him and take him away. He saw something creep into the room and in a rush of courage bit the thing’s foot and refused to let go. It was a thief. The next day after the arrest, Swami was commended in the assembly and said he did not want to be a policeman but rather an engine driver, railway guard or bus conductor. The next day Swami went back to sleeping next to his grandmother and his father pressured him no more.
