Answer:

A poor woman hated by nearly everyone in her village, dies of intoxication. She leaves behind her three kids - John (12 years)Kate (10years) and Maggie (5 years). Despite the hatred for the women, the villagers pitied the children. John was adopted by farmer Jones as he wanted a boy for help. Kate was taken by Mrs Ellis was looking for a maid. But, little Maggie had injured her spine 2 years ago and was not able to walk. She was not wanted by anyone. The ladies in the neighborhood brought discarded clothes and dressed Maggi in clean clothes . After a discussion, it was decided that Maggi should be sent to the poor house , where she would be kept clean, provided with healthy food and given proper medical treatment.

The next day, after the burial her siblings were taken away and Maggie was left alone. Joe Thompson,a kind and childless man, saw her and and took her home only to be confronted by his short-tempered wife. He told his wife Jane, that he was just letting Maggi stay at their house for the night and he would talk to the guardians of the poor house next day, Jane thought that Joe had a soft corner for Maggie. She went to the Little chamber where Maggi was kept and talked to her. Gradually, she developed affection and love for Maggie and began feeling motherly ‍affection for her. Joe and Jane decided to keep Maggi with them as their child. This brought love and happiness in the life of the childless couple. They felt as if an angel had come to the house in the form of a bedridden girl and filled their lives with the sunshine of love.
