The next day, after the burial her siblings were taken away and Maggie was left alone. Joe Thompson,a kind and childless man, saw her and and took her home only to be confronted by his short-tempered wife. He told his wife Jane, that he was just letting Maggi stay at their house for the night and he would talk to the guardians of the poor house next day, Jane thought that Joe had a soft corner for Maggie. She went to the Little chamber where Maggi was kept and talked to her. Gradually, she developed affection and love for Maggie and began feeling motherly affection for her. Joe and Jane decided to keep Maggi with them as their child. This brought love and happiness in the life of the childless couple. They felt as if an angel had come to the house in the form of a bedridden girl and filled their lives with the sunshine of love.
