Today's Olympic Games are based on what took place at Olympia, in Greece, nearly three thousand years ago. The Olympics were not the only competition games held in ancient Greece, but they were the most popular From then on every four years for a thousand years, men would come to Olympia, not only from Greece itself, but from Greek cities in modem Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Spain, France and Italy. The Greeks took the games quite seriously. Nearly all the ancient Greek cities sent teams to participate in the ancient Greek Olympics. If two or more Greek city states happened to be at war with each other when the game date arrived, war was halted for the duration of the games. Everyone wanted their ty state to win! Even a man wanted for murder in a state could not be held if he travelled through it during this time. Anybody who caused trouble during this time had to pay a lot of money. On one occasion, even Alexander the Great had to give money to an Athenian who was robbed by some of his soldiers while travelling to Olympia​
