Answer:

The presentstudy aims at analysing the characteristics, problems and planning

aspects ofpopulation in Bahraich district at block level.

Bahraich districts is (27° 4' N - 28° 24' N latitude and 81° 3' E - 82° 13' E

longitude) situated immediately to the south ofNepal border and covering an area of

6877 km2 comprises four Tahasils, namelyBahraich, Kaisarganj, Nanpara and Bhinga;

nineteen blocks viz; Mihinpurwa, Nawabganj, Balha, Shivpur, Risia, Jamunha, Chitaura,

Gilaula, Prayagpur, Visheswarganj, Ekona, Mahasi, Tajwapur, Phakharpur, Hazoorpur,

Kaisarganj, Jarwal, Hariharpur Rani and Sirsiya, 192 Nyaya Panchayats with 1,890

inhabited and 44 uninhabited villages and six towns, namely Bahraich. M.B., Nanpara

M.B., BhingaN.A., Jarwal T.A., Raisal BazarT.A. and Ekona T.A. The districtforms a

part oftarairegion ofMiddle Ganga Valleywith high fertile soil and comparatively mild

climatic conditions. Bahraich is the North-western most district ofFaizabad division

bounded on the North - east by the territory ofNepal, on the East and South-east by

Gonda district and on the west by Kheri and Sitapur district ofUttar Pradesh. Now (22

May 1997) the district is divided into two districts : Bahraich and Sravasti, butthis work

is based upon undividedBahraich district, because data is not available for divided district

till June 2002.

The physical features ofthe district are well defined andmay be are divided

into fournatural divisions- (1) Ghaghara basin, (2) Rapti basin, (3) Centralupland and

(4) Tarai region. The Ghaghra basin runsthrough north-western and western portion of

tahsil Nanpara and the whole Kaisarganj tahsil punctuated by numerous streams and is

subjected to fluvial action. The Rapti basin that lies on the north-eastern side of the

. central upland, consisting ofparts oftahsil ofNanpara, Bahraich andBhinga is a gentle

undulating plain dotted occasional crop ofpatches ofscrubjungles. In north and north-

east lies the tarai, the low land which remain largely inundated during the rains Bhur

consisting ofsand and loom, domat a mixture ofsand and clay in varying proportions

and matiyar are the main varieties ofsoil found in the district. Bhur is found along the

Ghaghra and the high banks ofotherrivers, while matiyar occurs in tarai with sprinkling

ofsmall patches ofloam. Domat occurs in Rapti basin and central upland. The river

system ofthe districtis made ofKauriala, Girwa, the Sarju, Terhi, Rapti, Kain and Bhakla

The other remarkable aspects ofpopulation problems in the study area are

rapidpopulation growth, high dependencyratio, lowliteracy, earlymarriage, occupational

imbalance and high propotion ofscheduled castes and scheduled tribes population etc.

Although government is hying hard to reduce population pressure and rapid population

growth rate through population policy.
