Summary writing on The newspapers of the early eighteenth century were still in the pioneer stage. Reporting was haphazard with little distinction between facts and rumours, and the writing was generally poor, although great writers such as Defoe, Sean, Addison and Malcolm did leave their mark on journalism. Occasional illustrations in newspapers of this time took the form of maps or plans to show different battles and sieges. The problem of adequate newspaper illustrations was not really solved till the early twentieth century. Papers during this era were often corrupt. Editors and writers could be bought by politicians who were prepared to pay them enough thus burying the truth. Newspapers had been selling at a penny in 1712. The government alarmed at the growing influence of newspapers on public opinion, began to tax them. There was also a tax on advertisements and on the paper used for printing. The taxes continued in various forms for nearly a hundred years. Later on the government also imposed a tax on publishing special articles.
Gossip and interest grew as readers were able to get together and discuss its content and so despite the several taxes, people wanted news and therefore began to read their papers at coffee houses. Some also hired copies for a small fee. Enough people continued to buy newspapers and so publication houses did survive.
