"The Seven Ages" is an extract from William Shakespeare 's famous play 'As You Like It '. In if poet compares human life to the stage of a drama / theatre and human beings as actors on it. Their 'births' are entrances and 'deaths ' are exits. They play seven different parts of live on this world. The seven stages are -:
- INFANT - The first stage of human life. The birth of a child is the first act of the drama of life. The child as a baby cries and vomits in the nurse's arms.
- SCHOOL BOY - It is the second stage. The child starts going to school. He goes to it with his shinning face and a school bag. However, he goes to it unwillingly creeping like a snail.
- LOVER - It is the third stage. In this he sighs like a furnace and sings some mournful songs dedicated to his beloved.
- SOLDIER - It is the fourth stage. In it he sports a beard like that of a leopard. He is quick tempered in matters of honour. He seeks reputation even at the risk of his life. He, thus, is not afraid of danger and death while fighting for reputation. However his reputation is hollow and temporary like a bubble.
- JUSTICE - It is the fifth stage. It begins when he is a judge. His body becomes fat with round and fleshy stomach like a fat chicken. His eyes are now harsh looking. He becomes strict in his behavior. He uses many instances and saying to support his arguments of wisdom.
- OLD MAN - It is the sixth stage. It begins when he becomes weak in health and thin in body. He, then, wears slippers, spectacles and clothes of his young age. These clothes, now, are very loose for his shrunk and thin legs. His voice becomes unmanly. He whistles when he speaks. He lisps like a child because he is toothless. In all, he looks a comic figure.
- EXTREMELY AN OLD MAN - It is his last act. This scene shows him as helpless as a baby. He is toothless, forgetful and weak in eyesight. In fact, he is without everything. He departs from this world ( death) after acting these seven roles of human life.
