Because the stamen has just one lobe, it is called monothecous or one celled stamen. When the anthers have two chambers, they are called dithecous, and when they only have one chamber, they are called monothecous. Anthers with two anther lobes joined by a connective are known as dithecous anthers.

The stamen is made up of this and the filament. In a dithecous anther, there are four pollen sacs, but in a monothecous anther, there are only two.
