Body mass index (BMI ) is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres.

Body mass index BMI used to find out if an adult is overweight or undernourished adults. It is an index developed by the nutrition scientists.

BMI can be calculated by following the given steps:

1.Measure the weight of the person in kilograms.

2. Measure the height of that person in metres.

3 Divide the weight by the square of the height.

4. If BMI is more than 25 then a person is considered overweight. If BMI is less than 18.5 then the person is undernourished.

CONCEPT:

The ratio of your weight in kilogrammes to the square of your height in metres is called your basal metabolic index (meters).

Your BMI will determine whether you are considered to be "underweight," "healthy weight," "overweight," or "obesity".

If it is your BMI:

Under 18.5    Kg/m2 is considered underweight and may indicate malnutrition.

You fall within the healthy weight range for young and middle-aged individuals of 18.5 to 24.9Kg/m2

Overweight is defined as 25.0 to 29.9kg/m2, and obesity is defined as 30kg/m2.

GIVEN:

• Sunita’s –

1. Age – 25 years

2. Height – 1.45m

3. Weight – 36Kg

• Nisha’s –

1. Age – 25 years

2. Height – 1.45m

3. Weight – 48Kg

FIND:

The nutritional condition of Sunita and Nisha.

SOLUTION:

Sunita’s BMI = \frac{Weight}{(Height)^2}

= 36/(1.45 x 1.45)

= 17.14Kg/m2

Nisha’s BMI =  \frac{Weight}{(Height)^2}

= 48/(1.45 x 1.45)

= 22.85Kg/m2

Since, BMI of Sunita is less, she is underweight and Nisha is healthy.
