Compound words are those words which are actually more than one, but when they stand in joined form, we feel that they are just one single word or one single expression.

However they can exist in one of the three chief forms. They can stand as open compounds or as closed compounds or even in the form of hyphenated compounds.

In case of open compounds, the words are spoken as two distinct and separate words, while in closed compounds, their words stand as a single word in its joined form. In case of hyphenated compounds, the words are differentiated by means of hyphen sign in between the two words.

So according to my interpretation, the word sun shade should be an open compound as they can stand separately even after being in their compound form.
