Answer:
“A Face in the Dark” by "Ruskin Bond" has a simple and short plot stirred with supernatural elements. The eerie sounds of the pine trees, the flickering light, the lantern swinging in the middle of the path etc. make us believe something is about to happen. The story narrates about daily activities but the climax involves Mr Oliver discovering the boy and the watchman having completely blank faces. The story though has the flavour of horror can’t be called a supernatural story exactly. There are numerous interpretations. One can be Oliver’s fascination with the darkness of his sub-conscious mind which leads to excitement and failure in particularising the individuality of people. Another reason can be this that over the years Mr Oliver has nurtured the students, so probably the individuality of each student has overlapped and the sameness haunts him now. It may also refer to the psychological problem of Mr Oliver created by his loneliness. The title of the story may also mean that a face in the dark is always blurred.
