Step-by-step explanation:

  • So a vendor has 900 apples.
  • he sells 40% of apples so it will be 40 / 100 x 900 = 360
  • he throws away 20% of the remainder
  •            So 900 – 360 = 540
  •             So 20/100 x 540
  •                      = 108
  • Now he sells 50% of the remainder
  •       So 540 – 108 = 432
  •      So 50 / 100 x 432
  •                  = 216
  •       he throws away the remaining 216 apples
  • Now total apples sold will be 360 + 216 = 576
  • Also thrown away apples will be 108 + 216 = 324
  • Now let the cost price be 1
  • Therefore cost of 900 apples will be Rs 900
  • Now to break even 576 apples should cost Rs 900
  • So the cost of 1 apple will be 576 / 900 = 0.64
  •                       = 0.64 / 1 x 100
  •                            = 64 %
