Mildred Keller
She was the younger sister of Helen Keller. For a long time, Helen regarded her little sister as an ‘intruder’. Helen envied Mildred because she became darling of Kate Adams. One day, Helen overturned the cradle in which her sister was sleeping, but her mother caught the little girl. When Helen was restored to her human heritage, Mildred and she grew into each other’s hearts. Sometimes Helen would go with Mildred to gather persimmons. She was an alert and observant child and once alerted Helen at right time when a train was moving towards Helen, her alertness averted something horrible. Mildred became her closest friend, Mildred also studied with Helen at Cambridge school.
Martha Washington
She was the daughter of Helen's cook Belle. Martha was a good friend of Helen. She used to go to egg-hunting for the guinea- fowl eggs in long grass with Helen. Helen wrote about her, “ Martha Washington had as great as love of mischief as I.” Martha understood Helen’s signs. Helen always domineered over her. The friendship of Helen and Martha added some beautiful moments to the ‘story' of Helen’s life.
Mr. Anagnos
Michael Anagnos was the Director of Perkins institute for the blind and a good friend of Helen. Helen wrote a story with the title ‘The frost king' and sent it to Mr. Anagnos on the occasion of his birthday. Later, it was found that Helen's story was almost a copy of Miss Canby's story ‘The frost fairies'. Though, even Miss Canby forgave Helen, but, it resulted in the loss of one good friend Mr. Anagnos.
Dr. Alexander Graham Bell
He was the inventor of the telephone and a teacher of the deaf. Helen dedicated her autobiography to Dr. Alexander Graham Bell because he was the one who brought light in the dark life of Helen. He aroused the hope in Helen’s parents that she could be educated. He was the person who advised her parent’s to contact Perkins institute. Dr. Bell became a good friend of Helen. He had a humorous and poetic side, too. His dominating side was his love for the children. He was never quite so happy as when he had a little deaf child in his arms. When Helen visited the world’s fair with Miss Sullivan, Dr. Bell went everywhere with them and in his own delightful way described to Helen the objects of greatest interest. Helen had spent many delightful hours listening to what Dr. Bell had to tell her about his experiments, and helping him fly kites by means of which he expected to discover the laws that shall govern future air-ship. Keller wrote about Dr. Bell, “ His labors in behalf of the deaf will live on and bless generations of children yet to come; and we love him alike for what he himself has achieved and for what he has evoked from others.”
Mr. Gilman
Mr. Arthur Gilman was the Principal of the Cambridge school for Young ladies. He was a generous person who learnt to use manual alphabet to have a conversation with Helen. He was very serious about his students. He instructed Helen part of the year in English Literature and he had broad views of history and literature. Mr. Gilman reduced Helen’s study duration and extended her stay at Cambridge, but, soon Helen’s mother withdrew Helen and Mildred from the Cambridge school.
Merton S Keith
Keith was an instructor in Cambridge who carried on Helen’s preparation for Radcliffe. He instructed Helen in Algebra, Greek, Latin and geometry. He made Mathematics easy for her. He was always gentle and forbearing and became a good teacher of Helen.
Bishop Brooks
Brooks was a very joyful person in Helen's Life who told her to think beyond the boundaries of caste and religion. He told Helen that ‘Love’ is a universal religion. Helen wrote, “Only those who knew Bishop Brooks can appreciate the joy his friendship was to those who possessed it.”
