No. of students signed up for English =18
let the no. of students signed up for both=x
x students are in chemistry and English .That means x comes 2 times when we add both so 2=+18-x=36
removing x once from the sum (22+18) is equal to 36
40-x=36
x=4
so, 4 students signed up for both subjects
