The possible formula of the compound would be A(BC₃)₂ or A₃(BC₄)₂

it is given that a compound contains atoms A, B and C. The oxidation number of A is + 2, B is +5 and C is - 2.

we have to find possible formula of the compound.

let formula of compound would be, A_xB_yC_z

  • oxidation no of A = +2
  • oxidation no of B = +5
  • oxidation no of C = -2

here, x(+2) + y(+5) + z(-2) = 0

⇒2x + 5y - 2z = 0

by hit and trial method ,

x = 1 , y = 2 , z = 6

x = 3, y = 2 , z = 8

so, possible formula of compound would be

A(BC₃)₂ or A₃(BC₄)₂
