Most house fires are caused by short circuit or LPG leakage. In both of these cases, water cannot be used as fire extinguisher. This is because of the fact that water can give you an electric shock if the fire is from a short circuit and petroleum being less dense than water will float over water and continue to burn.
Thus, in these cases, CO₂ Carbon dioxide fire extinguisher can be used.
In case the house fire is caused by burning firewood and other such material, then water can be used to extinguish the fire.
However, if you don't know what the cause of the fire is, it is safer to use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher.
