It plays an important part in the development of embryos, and it is important for the growth and development of our bodies as well. Mitosis produces new cells, and replaces cells that are old, lost or damaged. In mitosis a cell divides to form two identical daughter cells.

Mitosis can produce daughter cells that will be genetically identical to that of the parent cells.

The chromosomes are replicated and copied by the cell. To make sure that the daughter cell has a full set, the replicated chromosomes are then split equally.

Along with mitosis, meiosis is also a process where a new cell is made by dividing of a cell.
