suppose garpeet planted 6, 10, 14 and 22 plants of mango, papaya, guava and banana in beginning of one season. He observes that these are not and proportion. A fixed number of, say, x mango plants, x papaya plant, x guava plants and X banana plants have been additionally planted. Now the number of plants are in proportion . To be in proportion product of extremes must be equal to product of the middle terms:

i.e

6×22 = 10×14

132≠140

As given in the question if a no. x is added to all the terms they become proportional

so to find x:

(6+x):(10+x)::(14+x):(22+x)

so products =

(6+x)(22+x) = (10+x)(14+x)

132 + 6x + 22x + x² = 140 + 10x + 14x + x²

132+28x+x² = 140+24x+x²

28x-24x+x²-x² = 140-132

4x = 8

x = 8/4

x = 2

(6+2)(22+2) = (10+2)(14+2)

8×24 = 12×16

192=192
