Suppose one painter can paint the entire house in twelve hours, and the second painter takes eight hours to paint a similarly-sized house. How long would it take for both painters to paint the house together?

Time taken by first painter to paint entire house = 12 hrs

∴ Part of house painted in 1 hr = 1/12

Time taken by second painter to paint entire house = 8 hrs

∴ Part of house painted in 1 hr = 1/8

⇒ Part of house painted by both painters together in 1 hr = 1/12 + 1/8

                                                                                            = (2+3)/24 = 5/24            

∴ Time taken by both painters together = 24/5 hrs = 4.8 hrs
