As you know that wall is made up of atoms and molecules. So it will act as a medium for propagation of sound for the person standing outside. Hence some sound waves will refractive back from the nucleus of the atom and other will pass through it. Hence few sound waves can pass and so the listener outside the wall will hear the sound fainter.
