Suppose we represent the distance above the ground by a positive integer and that below the ground by a negative integer, then answer the following:
i. An elevator descends into a mine shaft at the rate of 7 metres per minute. What will be its position after one hour?

ii. If it begins to descend from 25 m above the ground, what will be its position after 45 minutes?

Answer:

(i) -300 m

(ii) -210 m

Step-by-step explanation:

Speed of elevator = 5 meter/minute

(i) One Hour = 60 mins

Therefore, descent in an hour = 5*60 = 300 m

i.e. -300 meters.

(ii) We use the same reasoning as used above :

Therefore,  Distance after 45 mins = 5*45 = 225 m, i.e. -225 m.

BUT, the elevator is 15 meter above the ground , i.e. it's position = +15 m

Therefore, the position of the elevator = 15-225 = -210 meter.
