Dear Diary

My first day at the Rameswaram Elementary School was very eventful. Although I was supposed to teach I actually learnt a valuable lesson myself.

On entering the fifth standard, I noticed a boy in a Muslim cap sitting in the front row next to a Brahmin boy wearing the sacred thread. I coup I do not tolerate this and I asked the Muslim boy, whose name was Abdul Kalam, to go to the last row. The boy and his friend both looked sad but my order was followed.

In the evening, Lakshmana Sastry, the high priest of the Rameswaram temple and the Brahmin boy’s father sent for me. He reprimanded me for poisoning young and innocent minds about the differences based on class and community. He asked me to either apologise or to quit the school and the island. I was shaken as the warning had come from none other than the high priest himself.

I was totally ashamed of my mean behaviour. I regretted having victimized an innocent boy and belittling his religion. I offered my sincere regret and esolved never to let any such prejudice to influence my decisions. I am grateful to Lakshmana Sastry for showing me the right path.

Dear Diary,

Today was my first day as a teacher at Delhi Public School, New Delhi. It was really a memorable day for me not only because it was my first job but also because I learned a valuable lesson today.

When I entered the classroom, I noticed a Muslim student, named Kalam, he was shabbily dressed and was least attentive during the lecture. I scolded him and ordered him to go to the last seat and stand there for the whole lecture.

After some time, our Principal along with a Hindu priest named Lakshmana Shastri entered the room. When they entered the classroom they noticed Kalam standing at the back and crying silently. Mr. Lakshamana Shastri asked Kalam about the reason why he was standing there then I told Mr. Shastri about it.

After knowing the reason he was upset and sad about it and told me that this punishment should have not been given to Kalam by me because this will badly impact Kalam's self-confidence and will hinder his educational growth. Instead of giving such punishment, he asked me to try to deal with students politely and with patience because children learn and understand things more easily when taught with politeness and patience.

I was completely convinced by the lesson taught to me by Mr. Shastri I realized that my action was completely wrong for Kalam's educational growth. So I pledged that I will deal with students with politeness and patience so that they can be more attentive in my class and learn things more nicely.
