Answer:

Dear Hebe,

I shall never, ever forgive my parents. Guess what they did. No idea? Well, mama and baba have left me alone in the house, for a week, in order to attend a wedding and funeral. I understand that I couldn’t go with them, since my school wouldn’t allow it, but leaving me alone? I’ve just turned thirteen! And I don’t even know anyone’s telephone number.

Anyways, enough moaning. I suppose I’ll just have to manage. It’s only for a week after all. I’m just worried about what might happen if there is a robbery, or something.

Goodbye,

Diya

Day Two:

Dear Hebe,

Yesterday, I wrote an email to my school telling Mr. Smith, my teacher,* and the headteacher I’m going to walk from home. In mama’s name, of course. And I’ve signed my schoolbook. Now, living alone for a week has become almost like an adventure. My parents shall come back, won’t they?

There’s enough food to survive for a week here. Worst comes to worst, I can always survive on bread and butter, and tap water. And I’ve got the house to myself, as well. I’m going to visit Daisy* and her parents. Do you think I should tell them my parents have left? No, I don’t think I shall. Mama and baba might be sued for child negligence (apologies if I spelt that wrong) and I don’t want that to happen.

I’ve got an online class today, and the debate person wanted to see all our parents for feedback. I told him mama was away, and baba in an extremely important meeting.

Goodbye,

Diya

Day Three:

Dear Hebe,

Friday at last! It’s the final day of the school half term, and best of all Marie*, my tutor, is away, so I’m not going to have a class. I emailed her, and told her that perhaps next week, on Saturday, we could have an extra class. I’m running out of things I can put in my school luch box. Since schools reopened, everyone has to have a packed lunch. I’ve always had a packed lunch, since I’m an extremely fussy eater. A diet of ‘sandwiches’ (just bread, but the teachers don’t know that) is just wonderful. For dinner, I’ve just had rice, and for breakast a waffle.

Luna* told me I look very slim. I like Luna. We’re not friends, as such, but she’s very nice and friendly.

See you later,

Diya

Day Four:

Dear Hebe,

Saturday is my favourite day of the week. No classes, I get to stay up late, and today I’ve just found a lovely dress of mama’s, which makes me look very slim and tall. I’ve always been tall for my age, and now I can dress up and go out.

I’ve just realised something. Because I (please don’t laugh) don’t know how to use the washing machine, I have been washing my uniform by hand. And I like it. It’s one of those things which you can do without thinking about, like knitting, or colouring. Odd, I know, but that’s just me.

I’m missing mama and baba. Baba would always tease me, and mama was always very kind. She was one of those people who could be stabbed and dying, but would always bandage someone else’s cut finger first, and then get help for herself.

Before telling you about my day, I was just reading about child abuse laws. And it’s frightening. I can’t believe there are animals alive and free that have raped their own children, or vile monsters who have destroyed their family from within. It’s horrific
