Supriya, while doing an experiment in the Science Laboratory, kept a laboratory
Riya kept a similar thermometer Q 10 cm above the flame of the candle as
shown in the figure.

In which of the thermometers, 'P' or 'Q'
, the rise in temperature will be faster?

Answer:

In 'Q' thermometer the temperature will rise fast because of convection currents. By the process of convection the gases expand and become light and rise up and hence the heat above the flame will be more.
