Suresh walks 20 metres North. Then he turns right and walks 30 m. Then he turns right and
walks 35 m. Then he turns left and walks 15 m. Then he again turns left and walks 15 m. In which
direction and how many metres away is he from his original position?
(A) 15 m; West
(B) 30 m; East
(C) 30 m; West
(D) 45 m; East

Explanation:

Let north, east, south be represented by N, E, S.

According to question: Suresh walks

⇒ 20m in North = 20N

⇒ 30m in East(right) = 30E

⇒ 35m in South(right) = 35S

⇒ 15m in East(left) = 15E

⇒ 15m in North(left) = 15N

Total displacement = 20N + 30E + 35S + 15E + 15N

 ⇒ 35N + 35S + 45E

But as we know, north is opposite to south, N = - S.

∴ displacement = 35(-S) + 35S + 45E

               = - 35S + 35S + 45E

               = 45E

Displacement is 45 m in East.  

 ∴ He is 45m away from his initial position, in East.
