If the cuboid has dimensions a×b×c

then it has a total exterior surface area E=2ab+2ac+2bc

and a total interior surface area I=2ab+2ac+2bc

If the cuboid is open at one end, then we can say without loss of generality that it loses the inside and outside of one ab side.

So the total surface area that remains is S=4ab+4ac+4bc−2ab=2ab+4ac+4bc
