The foldings on the surface of the cerebrum give the brain a very large surface area.
- The brain is the central information processing organ of our body. It's functions are distributed between three major parts- the cerebrum, the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata.
- The cerebral cortex of the brain is covered by several indentations and foldings- which give the characteristic structure to the brain. The foldings and bumps are the gyri and the grooves are the sulci.
- These structures increase the surface area of the cerebral cortex vastly to fit more number of neurons in the cortex of the brain. They also form brain divisions by creating boundaries between brain lobes and forming hemispheres.
