The person has to adjust the ladder to rescue the victim. Help him to find the length of the
ladder.
a. If the foot of the ladder is kept only 60 ft away from the base of the house.
b. What length of ladder would be required if height of the roof is 80 ft instead of 40 ft?​

b. What length of ladder would be required if height of the roof is 80 ft instead of 40 ft ?

Answer :-

when a ladder is kept around the wall . it form a right angled ∆ in which,

  • Perpendicular = Height of ladder .
  • Base = Distance between ladder and wall .
  • Hypotenuse = Length of ladder .

from pythagoras theorem, we get,

→ Hypotenuse = √[(Perpendicular)² + (Base)²]

so, length of ladder at a height of 40 ft and kept 60 ft away from the base of the house is ,

→ Length of ladder = √[40² + 60²] = √[1600 + 3600] = √(5200) = 20√13 ft .

and, when height of the roof is 80 ft instead of 40 ft ,

→ Length of ladder = √[80² + 60²] = √[6400 + 3600] = √(10000) = 100 ft .
