This study was carried out in SNDT Arts College of Pune, Maharashtra. Out of
243 girls studied, the findings show that (i) majority of them i.e. 120 in number (49.4%)
belonged to the lower middle social class; (ii) 154 (63.4%) belonged to nuclear families;
(iii) almost equal number of girls were vegetarian and non-vegetarian and they liked fast
foods tike pizza, potato chips, pav bhaji, chocolates, etc.; (iv) puberty reported between
12 and 16 years of age with a mean age of 14 years; (v) a higher proportion of girls,
numbering 166 (68.3%) experienced pre-menstrual*, symptoms; (vi) out of 230 girls
checked, 105 were found anaemic; (vii) majority of them, numbering 197 (86.7%) knew
that breast milk is ideal for infants; (viii) knowledge of sex and reproduction was poor
among them; (ix) a fewer number of girls, only 47 (19.34%) had some knowledge of
contraception; and (x) most of them, 208 (85.60%) knew about the modes of
transmission of HIV/AIDS.
Adolescence is the phase that comes during the second decade of a human being's life (10-19
years). This is a period of rapid growth when young people acquire new capacities and physical
changes with many new characteristics that create not only opportunity for their progress but also
create problems to their health and well being, if they are not taken care of. During this period, the
growth is accelerated by major physical changes in both boys and girls.
The rapid growth occurs during adolescence and demands extra nutritional requirements.
During this period, more than twenty per cent of the total growth in the stature and up to fifty per cent
of adult bone mass are achieved. Adolescent girls also need additional requirements of iron, up to
