Survey your area (about 15-20 households) and identify five very common diseases prevalent in your locality and also their possible causes such as genetic/Nutritional or Infective. Using this basic information prepare a power point preparation (computer preparation) or a writeup where you highlight the following points. 1. 2. 3. 4. 22 Cause of the diseases identified by you, their preventive methods and cure along with their symptoms. Ill effects of the diseases on human health. Why is it necessary to prevent such diseases and what are the advantages of a healthy family and healthy society? The 5 most common diseases in our locality are - Dengue, common cold and cough, flu, malaria, and hand, foot, and mouth disease.

The common causes of these diseases are - Dengue virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquito, rhinoviruses, influenza viruses, Plasmodium parasite transmitted by mosquito bites, and Enterovirus species, respectively.

1. Dengue - Caused by
Dengue virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquito. Symptoms include high fever, vomiting, nausea, skin rashes, etc. Intake of fluids along with antibiotics is the remedy.

2. Common cold - caused by rhinoviruses. Symptoms include running nose, cough, sore throat, with a slight fever. The remedy is antiviral medications.

3. Flu - It is caused by
influenza viruses. The symptoms are the same as cold, along with headaches, fever, and muscle soreness. Using anti-viral medications is the remedy.

4. Malaria - It is a communicable disease caused by Plasmodium parasite and is transmitted by Anopheles mosquito bites. The symptoms change with the type of parasite species and with the organ that is infected. The common symptoms include severe chills and fever during the evenings. The remedies include using antibiotics like chloroquine, quinine, etc.

5. Head, foot, and mouth disease - The most common cause is Enteroviruses, called the
coxsackievirus. It is a contagious infection which spreads in between people through dirty and unwashed hands, saliva, respiratory secretions, and stools. The common symptoms are rashes on the hands and feet, and sores or blisters near the mouth, along with a fever, sore throat, etc. Young children are most prone to this disease. The virus goes off in 10 days on its own. However, topical ointments, medicated syrups etc. can be used.

A healthy family makes a healthy society and a healthy environment. As an individual, we should put in our efforts to keep the environment clean, not throw the garbage and litter in the surroundings, decrease pollution, and eat healthy food.
