Given:

To get a 20% discount, Susan and Gayatri bought copies of English-Malayalam Dictionary each for Rs. 490

But the salesman was offering a discount of 30% on purchase above Rs. 1000.

Susan and Gayatri also bought a picture book each for Rs. 60.

To find:

The amount in the bill that Susan and Gayatri paid together

Solution:

The Marked Price of each of the dictionary was = Rs. 490

∴ The marked price of both the dictionary will be = Rs. 490 × 2 = Rs. 980

Each of them (Susan and Gayatri) also bought a picture book for Rs. 60

∴ The price of both the dictionary and picture book will be,

= Rs. 980 + [ Rs. 60 × 2 ]

= Rs. 980 + Rs. 120

= Rs. 1100

Formula to be used:

Sale Price = Marked Price - Discount ...... (i)

and

The formula for calculating the discount is given as:  

Discount =  [ $\frac{Discount\:Percentage}{100}$ ] × Marked Price ....... (ii)

The amount in the bill that has to be paid will be the sale price of the total items bought.

Since the sales man was giving a discount of 30% above the purchase of Rs. 1000.

Now, combining both the formulas in (i) & (ii), we will calculate the amount in the bill that Susan and Gayatri had to pay together as,

Sale price = Marked Price - [ $\frac{Discount\: Percentage}{100}$ × Marked Price ]

we will now substitute the given values:

Sale price = 1100 - [ $\frac{30}{100} * 1100$ ]

⇒   Sale price = 1100 - 330

⇒   Sale price = Rs. 770

Thus, the amount in the bill that was paid together by Susan and Gayatri was Rs. 770.
