Element is a specie which has all the atoms with same atomic number

While a compound is a combination of atoms joined together by bonds.

If we heat an element then there is no chance of evolution of gas leaving behind a residue as all the atoms will behave exactly in the same fashion so the given red crystal must be a compound which should have decomposed upon heating.
