sush was thrice as old as poonam 6 years back. sush will be 5/3 times as old as poonam 6 years hence. How old is poonam today?

Let Poonam be x years old 6 years ago

Sush is 3x years old 6 years ago

Express their present age in term of x:

Poonam = x + 6

Sush = 3x + 6

Express their age 6 years later:

Poonam = x + 6 + 6 =x + 12

Sush = 3x + 6 + 6 = 3x + 12

Solve x:

Sush will be 5/3 times as old as Poonam

3x + 12 = 5/3 (x + 12)

3x + 12 = 5/3 x + 20

3x - 5/3 x = 20 - 12

4/3 x = 8

x = 8 ÷ 4/3

x = 6

Find their present age:

Poonam = x + 6 = 6 + 6 = 12 years old

Sush = 3x + 6 = 3(6) + 6 = 24 years old
