Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM)
These are minute solids in the air in the form of smoke or dust that can remain
suspended for long periods and is also the main source of haze which reduces
visibility. Particulate matter can be divided into two types-coarse particles and fine
particles. Coarse particles are formed from sources such as road dust, sea spray and
construction activities. Fine particles are formed when fuel is burnt in automobiles
and
power plants. The finer particulate matter that is small enough can enter the
lungs and cause respiratory problems in human brings.
