Policies for sustainable agriculture and organic farming and possible actions in India are discussed. We can compare three broad types of farming: traditional production systems, conventional modern agriculture (such as Green Revolution technologies), and sustainable agriculture.

Sustainable Farming / Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable farming ( more specifically sustainable agriculture ) is term used to define such a type of farming which involves the understanding of ecosystem services, as well as the relationship between organisms and the environment in which they live. Basically, it refers to such a farming practice which have enough production as well as has no ill effect on the environment. This specific term i.e. sustainable agriculture is known to be coined by one of the agricultural scientists from Australia whose name was Gordon McClymont. Although being discovered earlier, the term was widely used and gained popularity by the 1980s. If a farm produces perpetually but have a negative or bad impact on the surroundings or the environment cannot be titled with sustainable agriculture because it has a negative result on the environment.

If we look around the globe, then we find several debates on trend regarding sustainable agriculture :

1. Multifunctional agriculture against ecosystem services

2. Ecocentric against technocentric
