Given info : Suzie throws the rock horizontally with a speed of 3.5 m/s and it hits the ground 8.3 m from the base of cliff.

To find : what the height was the rock tossed from ?

solution : it is based on horizontal projectile motion.

we know, path followed by particle thrown in horizontal direction is y = gx²/2u²

where u is initial horizontal speed of particle.

g is acceleration due to gravity

and x is horizontal distance covered by particle and y is vertical distance covered by it.

here u = 3.5 m/s , g = 10 m/s², x = 8.3 m

so, y = (10 × 8.3²)/(2 × 3.5²)

= 28.118 ≈ 28.12 m

Therefore the rock was tossed from 28.12m
