New Delhi: Teesra Swadhinta Andolan (Movement for Third Liberation) held a dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 31 May, protesting against the negligence of the government towards the great freedom fighters of India. The dharna demanded the government to take necessary steps for the uplift of the financially poor and downtrodden sections of the society and bring about real freedom which still eludes the masses six decades after Independence. The organisation has been protesting for these causes for around three years since it was founded by Gopal Rai in 2007.

Addressing the protesters, Prof. UP Arora, Greek Chair of Jawaharlal Nehru University, said India was not still released from the clutches of the British rule. “It was a company that first conquered India. Then the country came under the rule of the Queen after 1857. Even though we have got independence from them, it’s their system and laws that we follow in all sectors. Their clutches are still on us in the forms of culture, law and governing systems,” he said. Talking about the contributions and roles Muslims played in the freedom struggle and in moulding the cultural identity of the country, Arora said rulers like Akbar and poets like Ameer Khusro played significant roles in moulding India as a plural society. Talking about the India Gate in Delhi, he said the monument of which we all boast about actually honours the British colonial army. The India Gate reminds us that the British still exist in the country, added Prof. Arora.
Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan, Editor of The Milli Gazette, speaking at the dharna said that the entire Indian system was based on British ideas. “The police and the bureaucrats of this country behave like what they were taught by the British. Almost all the laws existing in the country were made before Independence and that makes us feel the British rule still exists in the country. So the entire system has to be changed,” he said. The existing system was made by the British for their own benefits while ruling India. You do not see these things in their country (UK). Our independence will not be completed if we do not get those laws changed,” said Dr. Khan mentioning his experience in UK.
Addressing the protesters, Gopal Rai demanded a total renovation of the Indian laws and systems as they are fully based on the ideas and principles made by the British before the Independence to Indian slaves. He demanded the government to build commemorative statues of freedom fighters at the India Gate and other places. “If the government is not considering all these demands with adequate seriousness, the purpose and the aim of the great freedom fighters of India will not be fulfilled. Though the government and the people talk a lot about the freedom fighters, they do nothing for them,” he stated adding that his organisation will go ahead with strong protests projecting its demands.
In a press release, Rai said the organisation had been protesting against the government for not fulfilling the proposals given by it in this matter. It had held a dharna from 9 August to 30 August of 2009 at Jantar Mantar for the same cause, due to which the PM Office ordered the Urban Development Ministry to look into the matter; but no step has been taken as yet. In the press release, Mr. Rai said that according to the government data, the per day income of 77 per cent of people in the country is below Rs 20 and 37 per cent people do not get two times’ meal in a day. It raises a serious question as to how a person can survive with 20 rupees while the claws of inflation clutch the entire country, he stated.
Upendra Singh of Punjab and Dr. Sunilan also spoke to the protesters along with many others. Hundreds of people including many farmers and ordinary citizens from different states of the country such as Punjab, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Hariyana took part in the dharna.
