India is struggling with the issue of Sanitation and Hygiene which has a direct impact on health. The problem is both urban and rural in nature. The current PM Narendra Modi has made this a national priority and has embarked on a nationwide campaign to make India a Clean Nation. This is the story of a woman, Ms. Pinkusha Raosaheb Kapase of Sikander Takli, Sholapur. She was grappling with the issue of sanitation as she did not have a toilet at home. The issue of having toilets inside a home is critical for the family, especially for girls and women as this is a matter of protection and self-respect.
The state government of Maharashtra has a scheme which grants Rs. 12000/- for building a toilet for a Below Poverty Line (BPL) family. The scheme is however not easily accessible to the beneficiary, as this is a really cumbersome and complicated process that hinders people, especially women, from approaching the government for the grant. Pinkusha Raosaheb Kapase was tired of waiting for this scheme to fund this initiative. Since she was from a humble economic background and could not afford the cost of building a toilet, she decided to mortgage her jewellery to raise the required money. After having gone through the tedium of using a toilet outside the house in an undesired manner, she did not want the same problem to be faced by her two daughters. With the motivation of not letting this become an issue even for their future generations, she decided to construct the toilet on her own. She received Rs. 10000/- against her jewellery as a mortgage and built the said toilet in her house.Upon hearing about this determination and struggle the Tanishka Foundation in that village approached her to find out the motivation behind this initiative, in spite of government grants being available. After hearing her story they decided to reach out to the government and get her the said grant by helping her fill up the cumbersome paperwork and reaching out to the government to expedite the same, so that she can have her jewellery back.
Tanishka Women are currently finding ways to fight the government’s apathy towards this issue. Three other examples of women taking up an initiative to build their own toilets have been identified. All of these women are Tanishka Members.Hence, by giving prime importance to personal dignity, social and emotional security, Pinkusha succeeded in becoming a catalyst for change and role model for other women with a similar plight.
