Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright,
The bridal of the earth and sky:
The dew shall weep thy fall to-night,
For thou must die.
Sweet rose, whose hue angry and brave
Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye,
Thy root is ever in its grave,
And thou must die.
Sweet spring, full of sweet days and roses,
A box where sweets compacted lie,
My music shows ye have your closes,
And all must die.
Only a sweet and virtuous soul,
Like seasoned timber, never gives;
But though the whole world turn to coal.
Then chiefly lives.

In Virtue by Gorge Herbert, the poet conveys about the lastingness of a virtuous soul. All the beautiful things of the world comprising a sweet rose, the sweet spring, and a sweet day are subject to deterioration nevertheless a virtuous soul remains unaffected

Explanation:

1. What is the Central Idea of the Poem

It imparts us that virtue is ever lasting and supreme. In this world of transience, beautiful things and beauty are subject to decline nevertheless the virtuous soul stays unaffected regardless of the passing of time, that is, remains eternally

2. Which colour of rose is referred in the second stanza? How do we know that?

Red colour since red is the colour of fire, anger, courage, and blood ("Sweet rose, whose hue angry and brave.....") Accordingly to the poet, the rose is asking onlookers to wipe the tears from their eyes as the rose discerns that it must dwindle away and die

3. Why do you think the poet has referred to the season of spring in this poem?

The spring here is visualized as ‘sweet’ days, colorful and like fragrant flowers and is compared to a box of sweets to signify the beauty and sweetness of the spring season. But the poet says spring, with its fragrance and music colour is ordained to fade into oblivion. Herbert continues to associate the beauty of nature with transience, as any sweet thing should, in time to come, lose its mellifluousness

4. How does the last stanza differ from the rest of the stanza?

In the first three stanzas the poet talks about all the beautiful things of the world including a sweet rose  the sweet spring, and a sweet day,  however in the last stanza the poet talks about these thing fading away implying that the whole World will be destroyed over time. Nevertheless the virtuous soul stays unchanged regardless of the passing of time. “Chiefly lives’ the poet implies that the soul will remain alive even if the world will not remain
