Basically the bacteria present in our oral cavity digests food particles stuck in between the teeth to form acids which erodes the enamel thus, resulting in tooth decay or cavities. Tooth paste just helps by increasing the pH (alkaline). But the main thing is the removal of food particles by the toothbrush.

The pH of the mouth falls below 5.5 and the tooth enamel dissolves resulting in cavities.

Toothpastes are generally basic, they neutralise the excess acid produced in the mouth and prevent tooth decay.
