When something sweet sticks to our teeth, it attracts the bacteria which tries to digest it secreting acid in this process. This causes it to damage the enamel.

In our tooth there is a layer called enamel . I is indestructible . when we ate something sweet . the molecules of sugars the reacting site attach to our teeth .
Also our teeth has some self cleansing property which use acids to remove the food particles in our teeth large globules also simples by salivary amylase (30% digestion) .
so due to the acidic property our tooth got acidic the toothpastes are basic they neutralize the reaction so that our teeth stay in neutral state (7 pH ) . and it may not lead to tooth decay
